Contributing to European Peace Through the Universal Power of Music (CEPUPM)
Contributing to European Peace Through the Universal Power of Music (CEPUPM) addresses social exclusion and cultural prejudice among young people across Europe. Hosting 40 participants from five countries in Madrid, this Erasmus+ Youth Exchange uses music as a non-formal pedagogical tool to foster empathy, enhance group cohesion, and break down stereotypes. Through rhythm workshops, collaborative song composition, and a public open-air street concert, CEPUPM empowers youth—especially those with fewer opportunities—to become active advocates for peace, inclusion, and intercultural dialogue.

Project Acronym: CEPUPM
Grant / Project Status: Project Ongoing
Project Duration: 8 Months (Start Month: February 1)
Youth Exchange Duration: 10 Days in Madrid, Spain
Applicant / Host Organization: ASOC (Spain)
Partner Organizations: Spain, Turkey, Hungary, North Macedonia, Bulgaria
Participant Profile: 40 participants in total (8 participants per country: 7 youth aged 18–30 + 1 group leader aged 25+). Over one-third of the participants are young people facing economic, social, or geographical obstacles (fewer opportunities).
Project Rationale & Background
Although Europe boasts rich cultural diversity, discrimination and social exclusion remain prevalent among young people. According to Eurobarometer (2023), 47% of young people aged 15–30 in the EU report widespread cultural prejudice in society—with rates climbing to 51% in Germany, 54% in Bulgaria, and 62% in Turkey. Furthermore, the European Youth Forum (2022) notes that 39% of youth experienced discrimination based on ethnic or cultural identity in the past year.
Drawing on UNESCO’s framework “Music: A Common Language for Dialogue”, project CEPUPM leverages music not merely as an art form, but as a pedagogical tool for non-formal learning, empathy building, and conflict transformation. Research highlights that interactive music projects boost youth empathy by 22% (European Commission, 2021) and improve group cohesion and conflict resolution skills by up to 35% (Harvard University, 2020).
CEPUPM addresses these challenges directly by utilizing rhythm workshops, song analyses, sound improvisation, co-composition, and public performances to foster peaceful communication and intercultural cohesion.
